That’s OK! We are here to help! Here is some useful information that might answer some of your questions:
At Bracken Recycling, we understand that the some of the State laws that regulate selling your scrap can be confusing. As a result, we’ve outlined our responses to some of the most common questions we receive.
Q. What does Bracken Recycling do?
A. We buy scrap metal from the public and businesses then ship it to refineries and mills to be recycled into new products. We don’t care if you have 1 pound of scrap or 100,000 pounds of scrap! We value every customer!
Q. How do I identify what types of materials I have?
A. To identify what you have on your own you can watch some of our YouTube videos where the owner of Bracken Recycling will help teach you how to tell the differences in various types of materials.
Q. What do I need to do with my materials?
A. If you want to earn some extra money while helping the environment, all you need to do is bring them in. We will do the rest. Our friendly staff will give you direction and gladly unload your materials when you get here. We also provide container services for pickup of large quantities of scrap.
Please call our account manager Brian Davila at 210-970-5866 to get set up!
Q. How much money will I make?
A. This all depends on the type of scrap you bring in. All scrap metals have different values, as they are traded on the commodity markets. We buy the majority of recyclable scrap by the pound. When you get here,we will weigh your material on a scale certified by Texas Department of Agriculture and price it out. You’ll always have an opportunity to look over your ticket and discuss it with a buyer or manager before you complete your transaction. You can always call our office before you load up your materials and ask what it’s worth or if we accept it.
Q. What types of recyclable metals are regulated by the State?
A. State law requires that recycling centers keep record of the specific materials that they purchase. While the list of these materials is somewhat long, in general there are special rules for purchasing the following items:
Aluminum (except for aluminum cans)
Q. What do I have to provide to sell material?
A. In order to sell state regulated materials, you have to provide a valid form of identification that can either be a State-issued Driver’s License or Identification Card. The ID can be from any state but must not be expired. We have to have the physical ID or temporary paper ID in hand for us to be able to accept the regulated materials. We are also required to record a photo of the material, your vehicle information, your fingerprint, and a photo of you at the time of the sale. This isn’t just a rule at Bracken Recycling. These are rules that apply to every recycling center in the State of Texas.
Q. Where can I get more detailed information on laws related to recycling?
Q. How does Bracken Recycling pay its customers?
A. On September 1, 2015, a State law changed that affects how we can pay our customers. We now have to pay you by check for the metals that we currently require an ID for, unless you have an approved “Cash Card” at the time of your visit.
A Cash Card is a photo ID, like a membership card, that you receive by mail after you fill out a simple, one page application here at Bracken Recycling. On the application, you will provide:
Your State Driver’s License or ID number
The address for us to mail you your Cash Card
A photo for your new Cash Card
Your fingerprint and your signature
Once you receive your Cash Card in the mail, you can present it to us along with your State Driver’s License or ID and receive cash payments for your transaction. In addition, your Cash Card will need to be renewed every two years. Without the Cash Card, we will be required by law to issue you a check as payment for your material.
We know this is a hassle, and we will make every effort to ensure that we process your application quickly and get your card in the mail right away. Please note that all Texas metal recycling facilities have had to institute this program. This law does not apply to the scrap iron or aluminum cans that you currently sell without an ID. Come by for your Cash Card application today!
Q. Can you accept my item?
A. Send us a picture of what you want to recycle and we can let you know if we can accept your item (maximum image size is 150 KB). You can also message us an image on
Google or Facebook! You can also call us at 210-651-0870 if you cannot send a picture of your item and we will try and answer any questions you may have! Hours of Operation Monday–Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday: 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
